in terms of the dog, i don't think it's as simple as getting used to her and waiting for her to calm down with age. you can try to reason through it and get used to it, but really, the emotional aspect of having your autonomy violated never goes away. it's, maybe most of all, constantly financially violating. after 2 years of pushing my ability to pay for vet bills for mawkish to its limits, i was eager to start actually building savings, and they dropped a fucking dog on me to make sure i could never drag myself out.
